Athlete of the Year Hilversym

Gooie en Eemlander (newspaper) 6 april 2018:

Track cyclist Carolien van Herrikhuyzen (41) and archer Willem Beuken (53) were voted best Hilversum athletes last year. The ‘sports team 2017’ was no surprise: again for the third year in a row this title went to rugby club Hilversum.

The national champion has now become a ‘certainty’ at this annual election at the Raadhuis in Hilversum, like footballer Davy Klaassen that was a few years in a row, until he made the (until now) unsuccessful transfer from Ajax to Everton. Last year the prize went to Ruben Assmann (jiu jitsu) and now to Willem Beuken, member of the Handbowschutterij Hilversum. With the men’s team he conquered the European title in the recurve class.

Van Herrikhuyzen sold in 2017 a medal on the cycling track: three times gold at the World Championships, twice gold and a silver medal at the European Championships and at the Masters Games in New Zealand she even won four gold medals.

There were also prizes to wrestler Tyrone Sterkenburg (talent) and the jiu-jitsuduo Quintin Hagen / Sancho Senn from Basel (talent team). In both cases, that election was due to EK bronze. Golfer Bob-Jan Dietrich was named ‘Hilversums special athlete 2017’. He was part of the European Championships for golfers with a physical disability.
